Mr McClellan said they also talked about the concerts U2 were due to perform in Washington. "They had a very good discussion about some of our common priorities," Mr McClellan added.

Bono received the lunch invitation to follow talks he had with Mr Bush at the G8 summit in Scotland in July.

// The Boss joins U2 on stage

Bruce Springsteen joined U2 onstage during the Irish supergroup's concert in Philadelphia on Monday night.

Bono asked the 20,000 strong crowd gathered at the Wachovia Center "Who is this man? Who is this man?" before Springsteen walked on.

The band and Bruce launched into a rendition of 'People Get Ready' with Springsteen's wife Patti Scialfa also joining them onstage.

U2 said through their official website, "It's a piece of rock n' roll history... That was a night to remember."

// U2 on Conan O'Brien TV Show

For the first time in the program's history, the entire hour of NBC's "Late Night With Conan O'Brien" tomorrow (October 6) will be devoted to just one guest: U2.

The appearance coincides with U2's seven-night run at Madison Square Garden. The band is expected to perform multiple songs and chat with host O'Brien during the show.

In the past, "Late Night" has had The White Stripes play on consecutive nights, and did a month of Tuesdays with the Strokes, but it has never focused an entire show on one band.
