// U2 making 3-D concert film

U2 are planning to bring their Vertigo tour to movie screens everywhere in the form of a unique 3-D concert film.

The film ("the first-ever 3-D multicamera live shoot") will be pieced together from more than 700 hours of footage and will be directed by Catherine Owens and Mark Pellington. The footage was shot during seven South American Vertigo tour shows early this year.

The film will be out sometime in spring or fall 2007, and U2 may also take part in the first live 3-D performance projected in theaters across the nation to coincide with the film's release.

// U218 Singles coming next month

U2 will release a new greatest hits album next month called 'U218 Singles'.

U2 18 Singles album cover

The album features 16 of the band's best known songs and two new tracks: 'The Saints Are Coming' (the collaboration with Green Day) and 'Window on The Sky', which is described as "an epic song in the style of 'City of Blinding Lights', with rich vocal harmonies."

Both tracks were produced by Rick Rubin and recorded at Abbey Road Studios last month.

There will also be a limited edition with a bonus DVD of 10 live tracks from Vertigo//05 in Milan. Sadly, this seems to rule out that the Milan show will be released later as a full concert DVD. U2.com reported earlier that the limited edition would come with a bonus CD, but this seems to have changed.

Besides that U2 will also release U218 Singles on DVD, adding to the confusion...

So as far as I can understand it, this is what U2 will be releasing next month:

  • 'U218 Singles': A CD with 18 tracks.
  • 'U218 Singles Limited Edition': The CD + a bonus DVD with 10 live tracks from Milan.
  • 'U218 Singles': A DVD with a collection of videos from U218 Singles.

// U2 leave Island Records

U2 Island Records After more then 26 years U2 are splitting with their record label, Island Records.

The band is set to join Mercury Records where they'll be re-united with managing director Jason Iley, who used to work with the band when he was a general manager with Island.

U2 have frequently said they owe their career to Island and that its founding boss, Chris Blackwell, was instrumental to their career.

But it is said that the band has decided to leave Island because they were fed up with the Island Records' senior management's "hands-off" approach towards them.

Both Island Records and Mercury Records are owned by the Universal Music Group.
