Last Monday U2 officially entered the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. The Irish quartet was welcomed into the Hall by Bruce Springsteen who described U2 as "keepers of some of the most beautiful sonic architecture in the rock-and-roll world." U2.com reports that during his 10-minute induction speech, Springsteen said that U2 is "both a step forward and direct descendants of bands who thought they could shake up the world. This was a band that wanted to lay claim to this world and the next one, too."
Springsteen also remembered attending an early U2 show in London with The Who's Pete Townsend and seeing "the young Bono, single-handedly pioneering the Irish mullet. U2 hungered for it all and built a sound, and they wrote the songs that demanded it."
At the close of the ceremony, U2 played four songs including 'Until the End of the World' and 'Pride'. Springsteen joined U2 on 'I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For', and U2 finished the set with 'Vertigo'. Springsteen said about the opening line of 'Vertigo,' "Uno, dos, tres, catorce -- that translates as one, two, three, fourteen. That is the correct math for a rock & roll band -- it has to be more than the sum of its parts."
